St. Andrew's Episcopal School was founded in 1946 as an educational service of the church. Daily informal classes for kindergarten age children were instituted in the parish house. In the fall of 1951 two primary grades were added, and by mid-September the first grade had expanded to two sections. Progressively, additional grades were added to the school so that a complete elementary education is presently available. St. Andrew's Episcopal School is an accredited member of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools and is recognized as an accredited school by the Virginia Board of Education. The school is also a member of the Mid-Atlantic Episcopal School Association.
For fifty years, St. Andrew's Episcopal School has provided the children of our community with a superior academic experience that fosters self-esteem, moral values, creativity, and learning skills. Founded as an educational service of the church, St. Andrew's has added a Christian dimension to academic life. Today, St. Andrew's continues to provide an outstanding academic experience within a Christian environment. Children of all faiths are accepted, respected, and taught to appreciate themselves and others in their differences. The school offers kindergarten and grades one through five. Our carefully selected staff enables St. Andrew's to maintain the highest standards of instruction and guidance.
The curriculum of St. Andrew's Episcopal School stresses basic academic skills with enrichment programs in: French, Art, Music, Physical Education, Library and Computer Science. Our emphasis on small classes enables our teachers to provide the individual attention that helps each student reach his or her potential.
School begins each day with a chapel service conducted by one of the clergy or the Director of Christian Education of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. The service is a shortened form of the Order of Morning Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer used in the Episcopal Church. The religious emphasis is intended to establish a foundation for Christian living, but no particular denomination is stressed.
The school offers bus transportation for students. The charges for this service are given on the tuition schedule.
Beginning with the 1997-98 school year, uniforms were required for all grades. A price list and ordering information are available from the school office.
Children are eligible for admission to St. Andrew's Episcopal School without regard to sex, race, color, creed, or national origin. Applications are accepted beginning in early January of the enrolling year. Prospective students and their parents are encouraged to come for a tour of the school and an interview during the application process. Entrance tests are required of all applicants, and St. Andrew's reserves the right to determine eligibility and placement of all applicants.
To be eligible for kindergarten, a child should be five years old by September 30 of the enrolling year.
To be considered for admission, applicants must submit a completed application, the testing fee, and an up-to-date transcript from their previous school. The entrance test should indicate the applicant has the potential to benefit from the academic program offered by St. Andrew's Episcopal School. The scholastic record from the previous school should show a record of achievement and good citizenship. The attitude of the applicant is very important. Is he or she ready for the commitment St. Andrew's expects from all students.
